Vanishing bone syndrome means: Vanishing bone syndrome is a rare form of osteolysis that can be inherited. It involves the loss of bone. These syndromes can be combined with other conditions. One form of “vanishing bone syndrome” is osteolysis. This causes severe osteoporosis in the feet and hands. MMP2 is the responsible gene. The affected family members do not have any MMP2 enzyme activity. A loss in MMP2 can cause vanishing bones syndrome by affecting the bone matrix. Gorham-Stout is one example of such a condition.
