Tamponade, pericardial means: Tamponade (pericardial): This is a life-threatening condition in which the fluid within the pericardial sac surrounding the heart causes problems that impair the function of the heart. If left untreated, the end result is shock, death, and low blood pressure. Excess fluid from the pericardial cavity causes the heart to contract and shrink. French is the direct source of “tamponade”. French’s “tamponner”, which means to plug up or smash into, is the verb. The fluid leaking from the pericardial cavity is, in a sense, smashed into the heart. A pericardial tamponade is caused by excessive fluid within the pericardial sac, wounds to the heart or rupture. Also known as cardiac tamponade.
