Punishments means in the bible: The Mosaic law’s punishments were intended to exterminate evil from Israel. 19.21-21 and were assigned on the basis of righteous revenge. It was death for life, wounds for wounds, and beasts for beasts Ex. 21:23-25; Lev. 24:17-21. Stoneing Deut was the usual capital punishment. 17:5 The witnesses laid their hands on Deut’s head and cast the first stone. Executions were held outside of the city Lev. 24:14; 1 Kgs. Acts 7;58. 21:13 Sometimes, Lev lit fire to the dead bodies. 20:14; 21:9; Josh. 7:25, or hanging on a tree Deut. 21:22. It must be chopped down and buried on the day of Deut. 21:23. A city that had been converted to idolatry was to be destroyed with the blade of the sword Deut. 13:15. Minor penalties were: beatings with a rod – not more than 40 strokes could have been administered Deut. 25:2-3; Prov. 10:13. Inflicting the exact same injury as the wrongdoer Lev. 24:17-22. Fines of money or in kind for injury Ex. 22:4-9; Deut. 22:4-9; Deut. 22:3. 22:3. Torture was never allowed. The punishments were only for the offenders and did not apply to his spouse or family. 24:16.
