Pacemaker, artificial means: Arne H.W. Larsson was an engineer from Sweden who received an initial internal pacemaker. Bradycardia and decreased blood flow to brain caused by a viral infection. This led to fainting spells, Stokes-Adams attacks, bradycardia, and increased risk of developing a serious illness called “Viral Infection”. A device about the same size as a hockey puck was put together by Dr. Ake Selmquist and Dr. RuneElmquist. It was placed in the chest of Mr. Larsson by Dr. Senning on October 8, 1958. The pacemaker and the subsequent ones enabled Mr. Larsson to “fly around the globe supervising repairs of electrical systems on ships.” According to The New York Times, he died of melanoma in 2001.

Histories: In 1958, Wilson Greatbatch invented the implantable pacemaker. He installed the wrong resistor in an oscillator he was using to record his heart beats. The unit began emitting an electrical pulse. Greatbatch saw that this device could regulate the heart, and he created the first ever implantable pacemaker. Greatbatch invented the lithium-ion battery that is free from corrosion to power the pacemaker.
