Moabite Stone means in the bible: In 1869, a block of basalt was discovered among Dibon’s ruins. Arabs broke it up in an attempt to profit from the sale of fragments. However, M. Clermont-Ganneau had already made a replica of the original inscription. The pieces, which were as far as possible collected, are now at the Museum of the Louvre in Paris. Mesha, the king from Moab inscribed it with an account of his victories against Ahab the king. It was placed in Dibon’s high place as a thanks-offer to Chemosh the god of Moabites. The story describes Chemosh’s anger with his people and how the land was slaved for 40 year. After that, he led them again to victory and Mesha destroyed the cities in Israel at his request and gave the spoils to Chemosh. It is almost identical to the Hebrew in the Old Testament. It was erected around 890 B.C.
