Israel means in the bible: The one who wins with God. Jacob was named this name at Penuel Gen. 33:28, and Bethel Gen. 35.10. This name is also applicable to Jacob’s descendants as well as their kingdom, 2 Sam. 1:24; 23:3. The northern tribes were the largest part of the divided kingdom and retained the name Israel. While the south kingdom was renamed Judah, it became the capital. Israel is still called the land of Canaan. Paul Rom explained that Israel can also refer to the true believer of Christ. 10:1; 11:7; Gal. 6:16; Eph. 2:12. 2.
