Hashimoto is the leading cause of hypothyroidism across North America and Europe. Hashimoto disease is characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland and decreased thyroid hormone production. It can also be passed down. Hashimoto disease is most common in women. Also called Hashimoto thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroiditis.
