Hardy, James D. means: Hardy, James D. : American pioneering transplant surgeon who performed three pivotal operations in the United States: The first human lung transplant was done in 1963; the first animal-tohuman heart transplant took place in 1964 and the second-lung transplant left the heart intact in 1987. Three years prior to the Christiaan Barnard’s first human-heart transplant, a 1964 transplant of a heart from a chimpanzee was performed. At the age of 84, Dr. Hardy passed away in 2003.
