Elisha means in the bible: God of salvation, or God will save. Follower and attendant of Elijah and his disciple 1 Kgs. 19:16-21; 2 Kgs. 3:11; however, while Elijah lived in the desert as a child, Elisha lived among cities. His master was distinguished by his gentle, affectionate disposition. He also lacked the fiery passion that he had. It seems they were together for six to seven years. Elisha, after Elijah’s translation was completed, became the most prominent prophet in the northern kingdom as well as the trusted advisor to the kings. The bulk of his work is devoted to miracles. They were mainly acts of kindness or mercy. These included the healing of a bitter spring, dividing the Jordan’s waters and obtaining water for people and livestock. 2:19-6:18.
