Eastern equine encephalitis means: Eastern horse encephalitis, also known as EEE. An insect-borne viral disease. The EEE virus is usually found in mosquitoes that don’t bite humans and freshwater swamp birds. The virus can sometimes be transmitted to horses or people by other mosquitoes. EEE can be contracted in the middle to late summer. Frost kills mosquitoes.

Fever 103-106oF and stiff neck are the first signs. Headache usually follows within 2-10 days. The most serious symptom is swelling of the brain. It can quickly get worse and patients often go into a coma in a matter of days. Some even die. Mild to severe neurological deficits are common in those who do survive. Few people ever recover fully.
