Ear thermometer means: The ear thermometer, invented by Dr. Theodor H. Benzinger in 1964. From 1947 to 1970, Dr. Benzinger was employed at the Naval Medical Research Institute Bethesda in Maryland. He studied temperature regulation and created the field of Biothermodynamics. The ear thermometer was created by Benzinger while he searched for a method to measure a person’s body temperature. He also wanted to get an accurate reading of the temperature centre in the brain, which is the hypothalamus. Benzinger chose to measure the hypothalamus from the eardrum because they share the same blood vessels. Before then, the only method to measure brain temperature was to attach electrodes to it. Before the invention of the ear thermometer by Benzinger, temperatures were usually measured using a thermometer placed in the mouth, rectum, or under the arm. If properly measured, the ear temperature is the most accurate indicator of brain temperature. Theodor Hannes Benzinger, 94, was born in Stuttgart in Germany in 1905. He died in Bethesda, Maryland in 1999. He is also known as the inventor of a method to determine calorie loss. Other important contributions to science and medicine include the Planck-Benzinger modification to the second law in thermodynamics.
