Dagon means in the bible: Fish. Judg. 16:23; 1 Sam. 5:2. Temples of Dagon were found at Gaza and Ashdod. The latter temple was demolished by Jonathan the Hasmonean. He was a combination of both a man-fish image. However, some writers question the authenticity of Dagon’s identity as a fish-god, and link his name to dagan or “grain”.
