Catechol-O-methyltransferase means: Catechol-O-methyltransferase: COMT. This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of catecholamines. It also includes the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine. The COMT enzyme is important for the breakdown of catechol drugs that are used to treat hypertension, asthma and Parkinson disease. The responses to stress and pain can be influenced by a genetic polymorphism called COMT.
