cad/cam/cim means: These acronyms all refer to the use of computer-based technology in designing and/or manufacturing apparel. Specifically, CAD stands for computer-aided-design, CAM for computer-aided manufacturing, and CIM for computer integrated manufacturing. The design phase is supported by CAD programs that allow the designer to explore ideas and experiment with colors and fabrics. CAM software supports the manufacturing tasks. When combined with CADCAM, design can go from preparation to cutting of the pattern to making the master plan, cutting fabric and grading the patterns. CIM solves problems when data must be moved from design to manufacturing to next steps. In computer-integrated-manufacturing, the various programs communicate directly, so that data moves smoothly along the production process in an accurate and timely fashion. (in Fashion Dictionary)
