  • The HTTP status code 404 refers to the URL. Your browser requests data from the server via Hypertext Transfer Protocol HTTP when you visit a website. Your browser first sends its HTTP header to the server before the page can be displayed. Your browser sends the server its HTTP header which includes the status code. The status code for a web page is 200 OK. However, you don’t actually see it because the server only sends the page content. You will see an error code if you are unable to access the page. If the first four are displayed, it means that there was a client error. This means that the server has detected a problem. A 5xx error, by contrast, indicates that there is a problem with the server. This may not be permanent; it might work again if it’s tried again. A general syntax error is indicated by the middle 0. It could be a spelling error. These last four characters indicate the error within the 40x group. This includes 400: Bad Request and 401: Unauthorized. (in Slang Dictionary, added by Pierre Chase)
